4 ways to cozy up your space this Winter
Drinking a mulled wine at 2 pm on a Tuesday and hairy legs can only mean one thing, Winter.
There's no better time of year to transform your space into a warm haven, well, besides January…. that’s a whole other topic.
Whether you're nestled in a spacious abode or finding comfort in the corners of your bedroom, this is your guide to cultivating the ultimate cozy retreat, whether you have a whole home or apartment to work with or just your beloved bedroom.
Scent
Starting off strong with my personal (biased) favorite, scent.
Scent is known for evoking memory, for all sorts of reasons, and it’s a perfect way to completely transform a space without really even doing anything.
Embracing the winter season goes beyond just visual aesthetics; it's about creating a multi-sensory experience.
Candles are obviously the allrounder in this sense, pretty and smelly (what a combo) there’s nothing quite cozier than candlelight, but incense sticks, diffusers, and room sprays will also do the trick.
Focus on scents that you would naturally find at this time of year, such as a freshly cut pine / Fir tree, or other richer woods such as cedar or Oud. Basically a trip to the deep Icelandic forest on a budget.
If you prefer a sweeter and more traditional winter / Christmas vibe, go for scenes like cinnamon, clove, cranberry, and ginger.
Adding different textures through textile
Depending on what fabrics and textures you have in your space can completely change the vibe. For example, in spring/summer, people may go for more breathable light fabrics like silk and linen, which match the time of year.
But when the temperature goes sub-zero, is a linen blanket going to keep my toes warm? I think not.
Faux fur throws, big cozy cushions, and runner rugs, in heavier materials such as boucle, wool, knitted cotton, and sheepskin can make your space feel way cozy and luxurious, way easy.
Buying cushion covers is a good hack for swapping out styles all year round.
Lighting
If I could start a hate campaign for anything in the world, it would genuinely be the big light, are you using the big light for anything but finding the back of your earring you just dropped? We need words.
This might seem super obvious, but lighting makes such a huge difference when it comes to the vibe of a room. It highlights certain aspects and just overall changes the dynamics of a room.
Harsh white lighting can feel sterile, whereas soft, warm lights give a much cozier feel. Try switching out your lightbulbs from cool to warm, and playing around with lamp placement. Candlelight also gives the same effect.
Bringing the outdoors in
Bringing materials that are found naturally in autumn /winter into your home, can make a space feel cohesive with the time of year, It brings a cozy organic feel.
Whether it’s a bouquet with wintery plants such as Oak leaves, pussy willow, deeper colored hydrangeas, or foliage like twigs. Or, decor items like wooden coasters.
Random tip, hydrangeas dry out really easily and look nice just shoved into a vase for a DIY dried bouquet.
Honorable Mention: artwork and prints
An easy way to winter up your space is swapping out currently framed prints with new ones, there are endless options online for wintery artwork or photography, try DESINO or Etsy.
So there you are, 4 easy ways to cozy up your space. Also, I do personally recommend and endorse a mulled wine at 2 pm on a Tuesday.
